Kirk began playing the great Highland bagpipe under the instruction of the late Paul Monette in 1983. He continued his training with Sandy Jones, director of the North American Academy of Piping, Valle Crucis, North Carolina.
Kirk has won numerous medals at Highland games in the southeastern United States, including the gold medal for piobaireachd (classical music of the Highlands) at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. For the past ten years, Kirk has been a member of the faculty at the Wilmington Academy of Music where he carries on the great bagpipe tradition.
